Firewalls
Frequently, the hardest part of hooking your company up to the Internet, is not justifying expense or effort, but the assurance that it is safe to do so. This is where firewalls come in. Firewalls are intrusion detection and prevention devices, or the corporate security guard for the internet. The firewall may be instructed to inspect each packet (piece of data) entering and leaving the network and then dependent on a rule set either permit or deny its passage. The power of a firewall lies in the fact that, like a security guard, it is selective in what it blocks. A firewall can be installed on your external network connections to ensure that no unauthorized access takes place.
